"The Honor of Her Evening"

It's about a year ago that a dear dancer sister of Haj, Tiggrrr and I - Marisa Yudkin passed on from complications from the incredibly debilitating Huntington's Disease. She always created art and dance using the decline of her control of her body as fuel. She would to the dismay of her caretakers come out for Haj's and my sets at all hours, laughing when she'd loose control and fall. A true freek soljah and a beloved heart.

This was posted in her honor on UTube. Brought me tears and memories.

Thank you Mikio, that was beautiful. I remember dancing with Marisa at many camps - her eyes and smile lit up the whole forest.

Another dear friend of many of us, Jorelle Pome, described as "a spunky dynamo from Brooklyn whose solo act puts the spotlight on her two-foot long head of hair" and "a dark-haired quicksilver" who graced many frolics and freek factories, had a terrible car accident 3 years ago this Valentine's Day which resulted in coma and brain stem injury.

She is now walking, has been seen shakin' it at recent frolics, and had a poem published in Chronogram magazine!

May much love encompass our dear freek and frolic families...

Jorelle had a poem in Chronogram? What month? Is there a link?

I've often pondered the strange light & shadow that plays on our family with the month of February, Freek Factory's birthday. Larger that us, bittersweet, beautiful, sad and scary like your poems.

February is the dawn of Spring, the maple sap is already running...as are the freezing flooding streams.......crocuses that put up some spear-like leaves are now ice bound....yer talking 'bout my birthday month.

february is the shortest and most intense month. i've long had deep connection with those born this month, the most auspicious beginnings seem to happen at this time, and the significant passings and tragedies in my life have happened in february. indeed, birth and death seem to rule here. . .

returning to the original post. yes, i began dancing in contact improv jams and workshops with marisa ten long years ago, maybe 11. i did not even know her name for years, but found myself on the dancefloor with her inspiring energy many times. i honor her. talk about fearless! mikio, thank you for posting.

For some reason it has never been the compelling verdant eros of Beltane, the full eternity in a moment of MidSummer, the rich gratitude of Lughnasadh's harvest or the turning of the light at the Yule that casts the deepest tidal pull on my pagan heart. It is those moments of pause between worlds, where we stand at the threshold and look back down the path and are warmed by our and our loved ones stories and look up the path and catch a glimpse of our and our tribes destiny. Like any good tale truly worth the telling within it the caress of bliss is made all the more sweet by the knife of pain and the joy of life by the shadow of death. This is the juncture when the Pagan parts paths with the Buddhist. We seek not to leave the wheel but to engage joyfully in the tragedy of life and from this create our sacrament of art.

            Ave Marisa!
            Ave Spring!
            Ave Winter!
            Ave Life!
            Ave Death!

Jorelle's poem is here. Keep in mind she is working very hard to communicate verbally with others - those dang small muscles that all need to be coordinated!

            Thank you for that Joelle

Wow - Jorelle was always tormented by the limitations and hard ceiling of the choices she faced in life. Painful to receive the communication that she is still not at peace with this. SO wonderful to get that she is the warrior spirit she always was and will keep climbing as long as there is a summit in front of her. Jorelle seems as if she is whole and intact behind a very foggy and scratched plate of glass, looking and speaking to us and the world from the other side, frustrated with the obstacle in her way. Totally great poem.
