We saw Bassnectar last night at gig 29/30, at SUNY New Paltz-- fine form, perfect weather for an outdoor gig, and a lively college crowd happy to jump around, some sound system woes (like the bass dropping out?!!!!)....he took off for NYC & Church just after 10 pm-- HOW WAS IT?

Perhaps the most intimate cozy environment outside of sunrise sets on the Playa I've experienced a Bassnectar set in years, even from the perspective of the original freek parties at Grand Space. Brutha Lo was in top form but seemed to tailor his shamanic whompifications to the CHuRCHified environs. Starting from his signature full throttle ragga/hip hop glitchified bass bombardment he worked through re-crunched ganja-cru style 90's jungle, old skool radio re-mashes, revisted Lorin standards (Smith & Mighty "B-Line!!!") to a place of lush, complex and immense beauty. He is in spite of a field now crowded with producers influenced by him, still THE man.

I was quite gratified to realize after back to back and then back again LoLo/Hajiji mixing magic that our freek Haj now can comfortably gaze eye to eye across the faders to his genre defining brother, a test, no matter how friendly the schoolhouse and the yardstick not to many DJs would want to take.

Haj in my book was on fire and quite frankly after working up a good sweat to the 10 to 11 segment of his third journey ducked out of returning with another full set to take the test myself. The short 2 jam dubstep directed pee/beverage break I gave him was quite gratifying though as Hannah Thiem and her violin "Scarlet" joined me and as usual had the room at her feet with her resin fire and gypsy beauty.

'cuz it's CHuRCH though all moments are magic and sending frame drum reverberating through NYC's best system for the small stretching and shmoozing 5PM congregation has a charge to it just like the nufunk bass behemoth we set loose at 12AM.

Thanks to both the CHurCH and the LOVE core teams for weaving the divine juju once again.
