anyone gonna make it this year? i'm underwhelmed to the extreme by the theme this year, but a friend offered me a ticket that she'd purchased at a low price tier so i'm reconsidering. guess i always have a moment where i think about skipping it and then get excited and go anyway, but this year it felt different.

just wondering if any of the freeks'll be on the playa...

theme aside, the one real reason that might grow legs for me is basura sagrada. shrine and tucker and the tribe are building the temple of recycled mojo ...
i may send something with one of yalls to go up in burning prayers with the temple. my grammy passed away recently and her memorial service is on september 5th in florida.

personally, this year i'd like to try my hand at not being homeless broke and sick in september. still haven't worked out how to do burning man without that tradeoff. i wouldn't withdraw any of my experiences from the burn or its aftermath, for always my personal surrender to potentially daunting circumstances has made way for astounding displays of grace from the universe, but ... my energies this year are going into more sustainable modes. . .

tiggr, I would be honored to carry your prayers to the playa for your grammy, if you don't make it yourself. They would go nicely along with the prayers for my gramamas.

someone told me there was no sunday night temple burn this year. is that just rumor or is there no way to make a temple to the "american dream" that doesn't somehow reek of either irony, jingoism, or some other heretical flavor?

its going to be interesting to see the attendace this year, with the economy in its sad state.

i just got two more emails from folks who've gone faithfully for years who are saying they'll be no-shows... not the economy, not the theme, they just aren't feeling it any more...

it's starting to feel like the "year of the no show"... the one that onion parodied a few years back... www.theonion.com/content/node/29344

so weird to be getting all this no-show feedback while reading "this is burning man"... which documents the split between larry harvey and the cacophony society, and how that divide split the event down the middle, between those who wanted creative chaos and those who wanted to create a rather monolithic institution...

      hmmmm....

well, if there's only one single part of the cacophony story that needs to be emphasized, it's that they were having parties in the black rock desert before larry harvey's burning man event got kicked out of san francisco's baker beach. they invited harvey out to the black rock desert, made burning man a component of their "zone trip" and then, over time, lost the ability to throw events out there while harvey retained the permits to host his party... it's an interesting tale. and the only footnote to add is that it was cacophony who posted bail for paul addis when he burned the man last year.

(yes, addis seems like a full-blown take-out order... when out on bail he threatened to blow up grace cathedral in san francisco, so i'm not trying to insinuate that he was a culture hero...just saying that it's interesting that the people who posted his bail were the ones who landed the playa for the bm org in the first place...)

True, I too will not be on the playa this year. It's an incubation year, feeding spirit silently, invisibly, for an emergence when ripe. My love is fully with you all, though.

          interesting....

I too am on a whole other journey this year..Missions to be completed ,followed closely by 1st steps in new directions....
Ill be closing an old book as the man Burns.

tho my heart longs to see this years temple. Surprisingly ,im not suffering from the dreaded FOMO but rather im all kinds of exited about the redonkadunk sums of cash i will have saved by not going .Im actually considering going some where tropical where things live and grow and burning a mini mini man on a beach while well hydrated after a swim in tempid waters .

I took a pass this year too.

I will be in Vancouver for some R &R, also going to a rock mine to dig for opals, crystal and quartz.

yes - replenishing in the pools sounds much more sound than burning with the man from this year's perspective.
it's funny, i too am feeling a kind of euphoric sensation generated from not stressing out about costumes for instance. just to begin with. . .

the last two years i have considered the burn the great annual family reunion of our tribe. this year i'll be on the beach reuniting with my blood tribe celebrating the memory of my grandmother instead. i feel a negligible twinge of fomo far outweighed by the calling to see the faces of my aunts and cousins, my brother and sisters and parents and grandfather all in the same place for the first, maybe only time in almost two decades.

my heart is so full of the rich connections fostered by the pilgrimages west, that i also have less need to go seeking reconnections at this particular point ... and much more trust in the tribe beyond and without the the burn . . .

. . .i could reeeally be down for burning a mini-mini-man with the maxi on a hidden beach someday soon tho. . .

yo gurrrl ...theres always reace park (brooklyns secret lair for mermaidian emergence).
puuurrrrhaps we should rock a gathering of the sacred burn-loveds who cant make the long haul to the playa..
we can spend a day at the beach swimming like mer-folk laughing for the wetness of it all ... bring our ritual in a nap-sack, watch the sun set with our toes in brooklyn sand and then burn our mini-mini's under starlight

                t'would be propa...

Yes, but I am going to "Disorient" on the playa, chill with my tribe and flirt with neighboring camp friends and random strangers I meet along the way. Oh yeah, I also intend to gift y'all with lots of Gourmet Raw Organic Goodness, so if you are in the hoodi and want a super yummi treat, please do drop by, for Dr. Organazmo will be in session!

At this point, BM and the theme are merely incidentals. IMHO, after "The Green Man", BM has become a mass consumer event, a really cool one, with lots of big art and flames and kinky stuff to play with, especially when compared with your average concert or tail gate Labor Day Outing, but that's about all. It's become the New "Worlds Fair" with the main differences being it is every year as opposed to every 4, which is gratuitously wasteful, and it doesn't move around, which has it's strengths and it's liabilities.

I am of the opinion that it should shift to a once every 2 year schedule, which is something that certian BORG insiders are sympathetic with. Unfortunately it has become a BIG Business, generating something like 40% of the local economy for that part of Nevada in a 2 week peroid, so as much as the BLM and the local mukity mucks complain about us, I would say that there are way too many financial parasites latched on to the main event to see it scale back or go away and disperse into the regions, as Larry has envisioned, anytime soon. Unfortunately most humans are rather greedy, in case you didn't notice, which is the root of all stupidity, so it goes.

    But hey, at least they provide a regularly scheduled dose of fabulous art, massive pryotechnical displays, relatively clean port-o-potties and an immensely huge carbon footprint, on an annual basis. Nice one! ;}

The one lingering hope is that individuals and camps self regulate and scale back their own operations in light of the economics and intelligent trends of the times, which appears to be happening this year. Bigger is not better, and in a small way, this is what Disorient is doing with DV8, and the "opt out" that many folks are choosing in 2008 is a good thing, as far as sustainability is concerned.

My feeling is that the playa can scale out to 50K and remain somewhat managable. When it goes over that, as evidenced in 2006 and 2007, it gets kind of gross. Mind you, I had a great time those years, but the amount of Moop generated was just insane, not to mention all of the gas and jet fuel burned so that we could have our week of "Never Never Land". Hoping 2008 scales way back from the numbers posted at the "Green" Man, which would be a nice shift in the right direction. We will see.

In the meantime, God Bless "Johnny on the Spot", or whomever is contracted to doo doo the dirty doodie deeds done dirt cheap! And Don't forget the DPW, if it wasn't for those folks cleaning up after us shitty slickers, this bizarre experiment in human weirdness would have been shut down long long ago!

    DoodieSattvas of the whirrled UNITE!

My road partner has dropped out.
There is room for 1 person and their gear in my Ford Escape Hybrid. I need a copilot from NYC to the playa, ideally leaving on the evening of 8/21, departing playa after the temple burn, and being back in NYC by 9/4. Pretty much everything is negotiable.

If I don't have a partner by this weekend, my ticket is for sale - $312.75 firm.

      Help! I wanna go!!!!!

good luck sooz! hope to see you out there! (i have faith. have you cross-posted to the nyc email list? it's always very very very high traffic this time of year.)

blacklight -- i fly to sf in a week... land on the 20th. have not one but now two (yes, two) tickets in hand... need to sell one. the other was "gifted" to me at $200 from a friend who bought in early and couldn't make it due to other complications in his life... so, yes, i'm going and now need to get the second ticket into the hands of someone would pay more at the gate to reimburse the friend who had insisted i go.

not sure precisely where i'll be camping, (somewhere near 3:00 & esplanade with easel park folks?) but, ummm... i float around a lot and am easy enough to find...

Shady, cinemagirl very kindly posted to the NYC burner list, I'm hoping for the best. I have 2 tent slots reserved with disorient, if my next road partner does not need one, it's yours.

thanks, sooz! hope to see you out there... i'll be camping with easel park -- 2:50 & esplanade -- but suspect i'll come by and visit disorient folks on more than a few occasions. hope you make it and we see each other out there!

i fly to sf tomorrow morning, rent a vehicle w/ crash on sunday and head out there sometime shortly thereafter...

it *does* feel like my relationship to the event and the experience has shifted a bit, but then my relationship to the grateful dead scene shifted ENORMOUSLY in the eight years that i saw dead shows and i never found myself regretting the choice to participate in that community, just a certain sense of, i don't know exactly, perhaps resignation that i could encourage certain directions for things but other directions were / are so much more out of my control... not at all a bad thing to realize... and like the dead scene, i find myself most critical and most easily let down by those things that i hold in the highest esteem... the let-downs being on some level a recognition that as much as the intention is there for many to create an idealized macro-version of our (idealized version of our) micro-communities, in the end, it's people being people, with all the good and ill that comes with the bundle, and everyone comes to the table with a slightly different view of what the collective "vision" is and how to best achieve it... for many it's sacred, for others it's "just a party" and, well, for most of us i'd say it's some version of the "most sacred way to party we can create"... dead tour was like that for me, too, even when towards the end it seemed there was nothing "alternative" happening on any scale and there were soooo many aspects of the corporate music industry influence (and flood of cops and garbage and bad attitudes, etc) seeming to pull it down the most mundane money machine churning along in the midst of a drug-addled sesspool...
