On September 5, join Winkel & Balktick on another epic voyage to a pristine equatorial archipelago. For on this night, armed with a slew of beakers, bunsen burners, polymerase chain reactions, artists, tinkerers and charlatans, we will climb aboard the HMS Beagle. Our destination? The Galapagos Islands!

Naturally, you've been selected to join us! Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Origin of Species with lava lizards, finches, enormous tortoises, beach-combing penguins, eels, sharks, and lest we forget, the dark-rumped petrel.

Chrysalis is an interactive multimedia performance space. Full surround visuals and sound inside a 100' inflated dome. Friday we are excited to have the Spinning Plates present live electronica, along with guest DJs, and Saturday we have live music with Stratus-M, members of Lespecial, and guest DJs. Visuals to be provided by Light Harvest, Danger Visuals, Levitation Theory, and Waking Dream.
It will be a unique experience, which we hope to present on an ongoing basis. This event is to help us get it up and running, and to help us present it at the Starwood Festival the following week. Please come support us and spread the word to all your friends and please have them do the same.

This will be a way to say "bon voyage" and send blessings to our wayward burners on their way out to the playa.

We are currently seeking collaborators, performers, and the like to put together the rockin'est party ever...step up!!

WickerMan brings together Burn Culture, the Art of Giving and Ecological Responsibility in a festival that depends on the Radical Self-Expression of each individual. Based on the tenets of Burning Man of the Black Rock Desert, we actively incorporate their founding principles- Communal Participation, Decommodification, Radical Inclusion and Radical Self-Reliance. In essence, at WickerMan, Radical Self-Expression Meets Radical Earth Spirit.

We convene to celebrate what we as individuals offer to the community, through Art, Gifting and Self-Reliant Participation. Together we commune within the land to build and burn the biggest Man east of the Mississippi River. Individual participation is what makes this event happen, we depend on each other for content and execution. Every contribution, from Volunteering to Art Creation is essential to facilitate this WickerMan. What do you bring to the table?

Art, in its many mysterious ways, is at the core of this event. WickerMan offers over $6000 in Art Grants to fund a variety of initiatives, everything from Theme Camps, to beautiful Installations, Altars and Performance. Through Action and Creation we transcend the expected and stretch the paradigm of the possible.

WickerMan will again take place at Four Quarters of Artemas, PA, a beautifully ecologically diverse campground. Four Quarters has natural swimming holes in Sideling Creek, rolling meadows and pine forest. Four Quarters also has a great Ride-Share database to help you carpool to the event. Bioluminescence is a Boat party on 3-floored, climate controlled, paddle-wheel boat with full sound and bar. Bioluminescence is a theme of aquatic, glowing and illuminated figures and art, an exploration of the crossroads bio and techno logical. Bioluminescence is a fund-raiser for the Kostume Kult and Disorient camps at the Burning Man Festival. Bioluminescence is a birthday party. Bioluminescence is a miracle of our natural and artificially enhanced illumination.

The party takes place on a Boat, called Queen of Hearts.
We will set sail from Pier 40 on the West side of Manhattan

The party starts at 10 pm and the boat leaves at 11pm sharp. Don’t be late!!

Chapel of Sacred Mirrors Buys Permanent Site

For Immediate Release: Chapel of Sacred Mirrors leaves NYC,
CoSM Sanctuary to open in Wappinger, NY mid-2009.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors has been a sanctuary for contemplation and events encouraging the creative spirit in New York City since 2004. Hundreds of thousands of people have visited Alex and Allyson Grey’s living brochure; their vision of a permanent home, but the lease has ended. CoSM is pleased to announce the purchase of 40-acre former interfaith retreat campus, 65 miles up the Hudson River. It’s a 20-minute walk from the New Hamburg MetroNorth station or about an hour’s drive from NYC.

CoSM Sanctuary will offer spiritual gatherings; educational and cultural events emphasizing art as a spiritual practice. Visionary artists, musicians, dancers, scientists and teachers will share their wisdom here. Sun-filled galleries and libraries will provide meditative and contemplative space for the mind, body and soul. The chapel you have seen in sculpted model will be built for the artwork of Alex Grey and others.

CoSM Sanctuary has wonderful opportunities, but its upkeep was neglected for many years and its buildings have fallen into disrepair. With your help, this once-magnificent estate can be repurposed.

The brick carriage house will be converted to exhibit the Sacred Mirrors. A conference building will host art, meditation and yoga classes. A cabin in the woods will become a studio where artists-in-residence can paint and sculpt for the Chapel and beyond. The main house, a stunning wood-frame Victorian, needs extensive renovation to be weatherproof and energy-efficient. Simple, affordable overnight lodging and dining for up to 100 people will be available.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is a 501(c)(3) organization, supported solely by donations from the community, which are deductible on income and estate taxes. Financial contributions and skilled volunteers are needed. An estimated two million dollars is required for renovation. There are tens of thousands of fans of Alex Grey and the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, just ten dollars from each can add up quickly.

from around the Nation's Capitol, including Asheru (Unspoken Heard),
Mustafa Akbar, Rootz & Zeebo (See-I), Sleepy Wonder and Ian Svenonius
(Nation of Ulysses/The Make Up) to help them create a record that
captures DC's musical diversity. Sought after producers and remixers
FK5 have over 20 remixes to their credit, including monster mixes for
A. Skillz and Krafty Kuts, Kraak & Smaak, Sub Swara, Ursula 1000,
Dynamo Productions, and Mo' Horizons, as well as remixes of the
legendary Tito Puente, Louis Armstrong, and Robert Nesta. They
produced 4 crucial tracks for Afrika Bambaataa's album 'Dark Matter
Moving at the Speed of Light.'

For this show FK5 takes things back to their roots, keeping the vibe

By Subway:

There are four subway lines that all come within 10 blocks (a 5 to 15 minute walk at the most, depending on the line).

The "C" train is closest (or the "A" train after 11 PM). Get off at the Clinton-Washington stop. If you are coming from Manhattan, be at the front of the train; if from further out in Brooklyn/Queens, be at the back of the train. You will exit onto Washington Avenue and Fulton St. Look for a large sign that says "Zion Baptist Church" and walk in that direction on Washington. Go four blocks (slightly uphill) to Bergen St., turn left and walk one block to the corner of Grand Ave. Our building is on the right. The C train and the A train run on the same track. The A is usally express and the C is usually local. After 11 pm, the A runs local and replaces the C. There is no wheelchair access from this subway.

The next closest is the "2/3" train. Take either to the Eastern Parkway stop. You will exit in front of the Brooklyn Museum, or across Eastern Parkway on the residential side. Get to the residential side and look for the nearest cross street, which is within 100 feet. That's Washington Ave. If you are facing the museum, it will be to your LEFT. When you get to the corner of Washington Ave. and Eastern Parkway, turn left and walk downhill on Washington (you will see Manhattan in the distance) 4 blocks to Park Place. You will see a police precinct on your right and lots of cars parked around it. Grand Ave. begins right there. Keep going the same direction, straight down Grand 3 blocks to Bergen, and you will see our building on your left. The entrance is on the Bergen St. side of the building.

Third closest is the "Q" train. Get off at the Prospect Park stop, switch to the "S" shuttle and go two stops to the Franklin Ave. stop. Just like the 2/3 train, you will exit onto Eastern Parkway, only a few blocks further away from Washington Ave. If you are unsure of which direction to walk in, simply ask someone "Which way is the Brooklyn Museum?" Walk approximately 5 blocks to Washington Ave. and follow the same directions as above for the 2/3.
The "G" train is the furthest away, but very convenient for people coming from Queens. Get off at the Clinton-Washington stop, and walk on Washington as the street numbers go UP. In three blocks, you will pass the "C" train exit, then follow the same directions as above for the C. It's a total of about 8-10 blocks, some of them long ones, but only a 15-minute walk at the most

Driving Directions:

Flatbush Ave. is a big main street in Brooklyn and runs right into the Manhattan Bridge. If you are coming from Manhattan, take that bridge onto Flatbush, go approximately 1 mile, and watch for a big cross street, Atlantic Ave. When you cross Atlantic, start watching for a Mobil gas station on your left. Immediately past the station is Dean St. Turn left on Dean, go six blocks to Grand, turn right on Grand one block to the corner of Bergen, and you will see our building on the far right corner. A cab ride from the West Village/Chelsea is about $13, from midtown just a few more. If you are coming from Queens or Staten Island and taking the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expessway), get off at Tillary St., turn left 3 blocks to Flatbush Ave., turn right and follow the same directions as above.

Parking:

Parking is easy. There are always spaces on the next block on Bergen, between Grand and Classon, or scout around a bit and you will find a spot within a few blocks. There are no parking garages nearby. Do not leave possessions visible in your car. Cars of all types have parked in this area, and we've had no issues yet.

Okay Freeks: If you're going to show your bass addicted, pelvis jackin, beat bumpin, furry lil' bodies to one co-created ritual of love & lunacy all Fall, I think you will agree, this is THE one.

First off it's the FreekMeister's B-Day bash and all sorts of divine madness would be in store for the family who gather to celebrate with him just based on this fact alone.

However showing his usual lack of restraint in the area things both sonically inclined and celebratory the Right Rev Freekus Maximus has in fact seemingly invited just about his entire extended tribe of sub bass abusers to share the party with him this Sunday.

Sub Swara, Freek Factory and Nyxyss, the branches of haji's musical tree will appear here together for the first time. Add a a heaping portion of furthur family support from SF's lovely DJ Shawna and Dub War's Dave Q. The moon wanes halfly and the earth will rumble...

Our biggest problem is how to fit this much into 6 hours and into NYCs most infamous "little" club with the BIGGEST sound.

So like I suggested earlier: Don't sleep.

This Sunday we throw caution to the wind and open wide the doors of Love for a *free* session of Church. The moon is full and summer sets, everyone is invited for the decent into the lodge to help stir up some of that old time religion. We set it off family style with a residents only throw-down of significance. Haj, Mikio and Nyxyss feat. evocative violinist Hannah Thiem, set the tone for the first in a run of six consecutive Sunday evenings at Love this fall.

Don't really want to take the sweetness from the gift of the moment to go into into detail about upcoming nights. Suffice to say with the direction and guests we have planned I feel comfortable stating that even our world wise, beat savvy family is in for something of a different and delightful flavor.

Just to put y'all on notice the Good Reverend Hajiji will be celebrating his birthday on Sunday 9/21. It would trully please the birthday freek to see the room filled with his friends old and new. I can assure you that the lineup of Haj's closest collaborators and friends on stage helping him bring it in with a bang is going to raise the bar for quality and quantity.

we are back again for the first church of summer. now you know you know how we do. Love is our home. come make the vibe and let your freek out for a good minute. it's so much better when you do.

mikio and myself will be your resident selectors. hannah and her violin as always will be very much at home at church. i do believe blacklight might have something to say about things as well. my thinking is that perhaps a special guest might be in order to properly welcome back the sun....

musically we a just mash it and offer it up. i always look for what inspires in any music then fuse it all together in a way that is like telling a story. often a hyph leaning crunk'ed story to be true, but a story told none the less...

last night was very high. it is amazing how beautiful you were bounding and unbounding with abandon.

"Every snake has its day…. For local belly dancer and “snake priestess” Serpentessa, two of her red tail boa constrictors will see their 15 minutes of fame while slithering over her on an upcoming “Wife Swap” on ABC TV.

On Wife Swap, two families, often from vastly different lifestyles and social classes, swap wives/mothers for two weeks. During week one, the old house rules apply; in week two the “new” wife gets to make the rules.

On the June 25th episode, the wife subject to swapping is Jehan Kamal, of Sunnyside Queens in NYC. I wanted to let everyone know about a new burn, and I am part of the planning team for it, so my opinion is biased!

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

It's about a year ago that a dear dancer sister of Haj, Tiggrrr and I - Marisa Yudkin passed on from complications from the incredibly debilitating Huntington's Disease. She always created art and dance using the decline of her control of her body as fuel. She would to the dismay of her caretakers come out for Haj's and my sets at all hours, laughing when she'd loose control and fall. A true freek soljah and a beloved heart.

those of you who have known me for a minute know that i have been actively dreaming this event to life since all the way back when. woven through and from the original magyk of 'Late Night Temple' at DNE, the Frolic explorations at dawn in the fae filled fields of Tilson, 'Rhythm Oasis', and all the madness and tribal euphoria of the early 'Body Temple' days.... Church is both a continuance and an arrival, the realization of a well cherished dream and its continued unfolding.

i am well pleased that Mikio will be by my side co-hosting Church and taking a turn on the sonic pulpit. both Mikio and i caught direct inspiration from 'Body And Soul' at Vinyl and Danny K's offshoot '718 Sessions'. we were blessed with an intimate first hand view, as we were both enlisted in the Metrosound army that built and maintained that epic system at Vinyl. to be clear, we take the musical journey in quite a different way than those guys, but the spirit of tolerance within an open community, the dedication to excellence in production, and a beautiful community gathered around the love of music and dance is what we took from those days.

Thompson, and a document of how his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of his fans. Blasted!!! follows the many "Gonzo Patriots" across America that volunteered their personally owned artillery to fulfill the good doctor's last wish to have his ashes fired from a cannon. Before Johnny Depp became involved with the ceremony, and paid over 2 million dollars for a professional fireworks company to blast his friend's ashes from a 200 foot tall 'Gonzo fist,' an essay contest was held by the Aspen Daily News (at the request of Hunter's family) to see who would be available to provide the service of firing his ashes. Over 50 private cannon owners applied and though these letters were published in Harper's magazine, these brave men and women, who had come forward to fulfill the dying wish of their hero...were eventually forgotten.

Radio documentary searching for people who have fallen in love online

Have you met someone online with whom you fell in love or began to fall in love before you ever met in person?

I’m a journalist and a masters student at the Columbia University School of Journalism, and I’m producing a half-hour radio documentary that in part seeks to explore how the Internet is changing the ways we fall in love. I’m searching for individuals who met online—whether through a dating site or through MySpace, Facebook, Tribe, etc.—and fell or began to fall in love through online correspondence and/or chatting before meeting in person. I’m interested in interviewing individuals and couples from both current and past relationships that started online.

I will need to record the conversation, as the project is for radio. My intention is to pitch the documentary in whole or in part to national and local NPR programs, and I have received initial interest from several venues.

in search of music

happy new year all!

ok hears the deal. i first attended burning man in 2004 and up until then i was, am i am still a music junkie. back before i went to burning man the music that i was focused on was rock based and always centered around the guitar . i never really listened to electronic music until that first burn and i instantly gravitated towards the funky beats. its been a long 3.5 years but now im feeling like i need to go back to my roots.

every night i listen to music to get me to sleep, its a ritual for me for years. however i have been listening to the same stuff, either pink floyd, zero seven, conspiracy theory, alice in chains unplugged, ben harper, and thats all i have. i know there's tons more out there that i dont know about, if you could give me suggestions for slower music, not really electronically based i would love ya forever.
it could be old or new too.

Australia is suffering through its worst dry spell in a millennium. The outback has turned into a dust bowl, crops are dying off at fantastic rates, cities are rationing water, coral reefs are dying, and the agricultural base is evaporating.

But what really intrigues Glenn Albrecht — a philosopher by training — is how his fellow Australians are reacting.
They're getting sad.

In interviews Albrecht conducted over the past few years, scores of Australians described their deep, wrenching sense of loss as they watch the landscape around them change. Familiar plants don't grow any more. Gardens won't take. Birds are gone. "They no longer feel like they know the place they've lived for decades," he says.

Albrecht believes that this is a new type of sadness. People are feeling displaced. They're suffering symptoms eerily similar to those of indigenous populations that are forcibly removed from their traditional homelands. But nobody is being relocated; they haven't moved anywhere. It's just that the familiar markers of their area, the physical and sensory signals that define home, are vanishing. Their environment is moving away from them, and they miss it terribly.

Albrecht has given this syndrome an evocative name: solastalgia. It's a mashup of the roots solacium (comfort) and algia (pain), which together aptly conjure the word nostalgia. In essence, it's pining for a lost environment. "Solastalgia," as he wrote in a scientific paper describing his theory, "is a form of homesickness one gets when one is still at home.'"

It's also a fascinating new way to think about the impact of global warming. Everyone's worrying about resource management and the spooky, unpredictable changes in the ecosystem. We fret over which areas will get flooded as sea levels rise. We estimate the odds of wars over clean water, and we tally up the species — polar bears, whales, wading birds — that'll go extinct.

But we should also be concerned about the huge toll climate change will inflict on our mental health. In the modern, industrialized West, many of us have forgotten how deeply we rely on the stability of nature for our psychic well-being. In a world of cheap airfares, laptops, and the Internet, we proudly regard mobility as a sign of how advanced we are. Hey, we're nomadic hipster capitalists! We love change. Only losers get attached to their hometowns.

This is a neat mythos, but in truth it's a pretty natural human urge to identify with a place and build one's sense of self around its comforts and permanence. I live in Manhattan, where the globe-hopping denizens tend to go berserk if their favorite coffee shop closes down. How will they react in 20 or 30 years if the native trees can't handle the 5-degree spike in average temperature? Or if weird new bugs infest the city in summer, fall shrinks to a single month, and snow becomes a distant memory? "We like to think that we're cool, 21st-century people, but the basic sense of a connection to the land is still big," Albrecht says. "We haven't evolved that much.

"What's more, Albrecht has noticed that the more quickly environmental change occurs, the more intense the solastalgia. The mental-health effects can be powerful. In the Australian outback, industrial activity — notably open-pit coal mining — has turned verdant areas into moonscapes seemingly overnight, and the suicide rate in the region has skyrocketed. Or witness New Orleans, where a Harvard survey found that survivors of Hurricane Katrina reported suffering a "serious mental illness" at roughly double the rate of the city's residents three years earlier. Fully 6 percent have thought about suicide. Trauma and personal loss obviously play a role in this, but the decimation of the city's physical environment surely does as well.

Ironically, we may simply be rediscovering a syndrome that we thought was dead and buried. Back in the 1940s, the military considered homesickness to be a serious and potentially fatal illness, because drafted soldiers who got shipped overseas would often become savagely depressed. These days, Americans are rarely dislocated against their will, and the army is all-volunteer. Few of us have the experience of being unmoored in the world.

But that may be changing rapidly. In a world that's quickly heating up and drying up, you can't go home again — even if you never leave.

On exhibit at MicroCoSM Gallery are Grey's major new paintings including “Holy Family,” and "Net of Being," a fifteen-foot long oil painting introduced to millions by the rock band TOOL. After years of labor, this epic work is on view along with drawings that led to its creation. Related to Grey's series of painted and sculpted "universal beings," begun in 1999, the "Net of Being" portrays an endless perspective of column-like four-faced Godheads. Each head is composed of a fiery grid of eyes and galaxies linked with similar heads in an endless mesh, implying a realm of boundless interconnectedness. A new topology of Being and infinite awareness is mapped by this omni-directional web. Grey states that this visionary realm was visited during an entheogenic (psychedelic) ayahuasca journey he ex-
perienced in 2002. Small sculptural details of the Net of Being are also on view. “Net of Being” was featured on the cover of TOOL’s recent “10,000 Days” album, and the CD package won a 2007 Grammy Award.

Also on exhibit are models of the future Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, architecture designed by Alex Grey. The
entryway pavilion on the ground level is a wheel of 12 Godhead columns similar to those portrayed in the
painting "Net of Being." In the space between the heads nestle smaller replicas of the large domed Chapel.
Smaller Godheads and Chapel shapes repeat fractally, reaching tiny proportions that harmonically relate
to the overall pattern of the building. From every point of view on the grounds of this domed circular struc-
ture, observers witness two profiles mirroring each other, created by the outline of the building and implying
two giant celestial faces. The message encoded in the building is, “When beings come together in Oneness,
they create sacred space.”

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, being designed to house a permanent collection of
Grey's paintings and sculpture, is itself a profoundly inspiring sculpture for a timeless body of artwork.
Best known for his paintings which “X-ray” multiple dimensions of reality, Alex Grey's visual meditations
on the nature of life and consciousness, have led to a world renowned career of exhibitions from the New Mu-
seum in NYC, to Tokyo, to Sao Paulo, a retrospective at Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego, features
on Discovery Channel, Newsweek, Time, and album art for multi-platinum and Grammy award winning rock
bands such as Tool, Beastie Boys, and Nirvana. Because of his underground cult status in the psychedelic
world, his artwork is some of the most reproduced on sheets of blotter acid.

Alex Grey's art illuminates worlds of subtle energy and proposes new icons of trans-denominational spirituality. Along with his wife,
artist Allyson Grey, Alex co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, located in Chelsea, open for three
years, as a testing ground for the alliance of divinity, creativity, and community.
